Lisztomania: 6 Reasons You Should Listen to The Mummies

Because everybody loves lists...
Ah, The Mummies. These guys were a garage punk band that operated out of the Bay Area in the late '80s/early '90s. Other than some pretty radical mummy costuming--which you can clearly see above--the band was known for touring in a Munsters-esque 1963 Pontiac ambulance, performing on specifically lo-fi/damaged equipement and their utter committal to released material on vinyl only. All those quirks made their Stooges-by-way-of-The Misfits and The Beach Boys sound that much better.

Man, bands like this just don't come around today...

Panda Bear Drops a Mastered Track from Tomboy, Sweet

Panda Bear's forthcoming Tomboy is such a highly anticipated record because 1. Person Pitch was amazing 2. He's part of the Animal Collective and 3. There's few things better than Brian Wilson harmonies juxtaposed with liquidy samples.

The LP doesn't drop till April 12, but Noah Lennox (his real name) has been releasing singles since last summer, which also happen to make up six of the album's 11 tracks. "Last Night at the Jetty" is the first taste of officially mastered goodness and it doesn't disappoint.

Listen to the skittering Beach Boy vibes below, plus a few related tracks including "Slow Motion," which is also Tomboy bound.

California Dreamin' With Celestial Shore's California Eden

"Recorded mostly on a couch in West Hollywood and sometimes in a carpeted room in South Los Angeles," so says Celestial Shore's Bandcamp page.

The SoCal band's debut EP, California Eden, shows off those beachy roots in a marraige of post-punk and Beach Boys that would make Mike Love blush.

Radio Dept. Release New Single, Get Political on Us

I really dig the Radio Dept.'s latest effort, Clinging to a Scheme. The Swedes and their Pet Sounds-by-way-of-The Smiths sound produces some of the best indie-pop these hip ears have heard all year, without getting too sugary or twee.

With their new LP just five months old, the trio has dropped a fresh, unrelated single, "The New Improved Hypocrisy." Bonus: it's political. The track is a critique of the Swedish government, who are holding elections this Sunday.
