MP3: Azealia Banks - "212"

When I first saw Azealia Banks, I'd written her off as a copy of a copy, Dominique Young Unique by way of Amanda Blank and Kid Sister. Like Unique, Banks is under 21 and armed with a hyper-kinetic, sexualized flow, but the similarities end there and I've been eating crow for not taking notice sooner.

Having attended New York's lauded LaGuardia High School (notable alums: Nicki Minaj, Kelis and Paul Stanley), Banks is more than a rapper--add "slash singer, slash actress" to her résumé--proudly displaying talent and range on "212." Accents, singing and smut come together in three and a half minutes of basement pop. Most importantly, it straight slays. Sure, the track is a few months old, but it's still a pitch-perfect coming out party. Weaving all of Banks' artistic proclivities results in a spastic anthem that would make Diplo proud.

Some old tunes, some new tunes, all good tunes, most Mondays...

Do to life, work and the holiday, November came and went without a single post. While it's a bummer the site wasn't updated in the interim, I was still listening to all kind of tunes. Even though I didn't write about them, here are ten songs I couldn't get enough of last month...

This Weekend in Pandering Party Music...

Sure, posting songs like these betray my affinity for genres like 90s indie rock, dubstep, 80s D.C. hardcore, IDM or chillwave, but I refuse to apologize for my adoration of a solid party tune. Whether or not you'll be playing any of these tracks depends on what kind of party you're throwing this weekend, but each should find a home on playlist near you...

There's the catchy-clubiness of Rihanna's "We Found Love," the southern growl of T.I.'s "I'm Flexin'," the seedy bass of Big Sean and Nicki Minaj's "Ass" and--in a startling turn--the pitch-shifting coolness of Jamie Woon's "Video Games" remix.

Summer's Ending? Citizen Insane's Got a Mixtape for That

Well, it's September and I can already feel the changes. I've started to wear actual shoes instead of, y'know, flip-flops. I'm finally wearing pants again, breaking my shorts-everyday summer record. I've even stopped sweating through every t-shirt I go out in. But before October rears is chilly, leaf-turning head, let's all soak up these last few weeks of sunned weather, patio bars and the outdoors with no jacket required... Pretty soon, we'll be missing it.

Citizen Mix Vol. VII - Summer's End

Tracklist:

1. Major Lazer - Keep It Going Louder (So Shifty Remix)
2. The Zombies - Time of the Season
3. TV Girl - Benny and The Jetts
4. Wugazi - Ghetto Afterthought
5. The Scientists - Frantic Romantic
6. Syme - Modern Love (David Bowie Cover)

Dream Jefferson Could Soundtrack Your Next Party

Well, this was a surprise. Who would've thought a hip-hop/electronic duo from Ottawa could deftly combine old skool rhymes, b-boy beats and Friday-night hipster danceability? Inexplicably, Dream Jefferson's latest album, Punch Perm, manages to do just that.

The seven track affair barely clocks in at 30 minutes (and can be downloaded in full over at their Bandcamp page), but that's still 30 minutes of a drunken, sing-a-long basement party. While the music's not as galvanizing as, say, Odd Future, Dream Jefferson are a hell of a lot of fun--which is exactly what party rap should be.

"For too long, party rap has been the province of the hyper-sexual, presented comically or with straight faced perversion, with little or nothing to bridge the gap. What the genre lacks is a basis in reality, as opposed to a juvenile masturbatory fantasy, an honesty which would allow for a connection between the listener and the artist... From this day forward, party rap will be divided into two strata – everything else and this, [Dream Jefferson]," wrote the group on their website.

With intentions like those, is it any surprise these guys deliver some good times?

FINALLY - That Fugazi/Wu-Tang Mash-Up Record Is Here

Remember when I told you about that Fugazi/Wu-Tang Clan mash-up album, cleverly titled Wugazi? Well the full mixtape has finally been released.

Having spun through it twice today, it's easily one of your must download mixes of summer 2011 and yes, 13 Chambers is still the best title ever.

New Wu-Tang/Fugazi Mash-up Record May Be the Best Yet

It looks like laptop aficionados are getting a lot more creative with their full-length remix records because the latest effort to pop-up online, a mix of Wu-Tang Clan and Fugazi, could be the best one I've heard yet.

The project, cleverly titled Wugazi, has released two singles, but an entire album is due out in a week or so. And of course, it's titled 13 Chambers.

Between this project, the James Blake/Drake mash-up LP, James Drake, and last year's excellent Notorious B.I.G./The xx remixer, summer playlists should be spilling over with mash-up goodness...

MP3s: Domo Genesis - "Boss' Life" + "Cashmere"

Domo Genesis has always been the fourth best act of Odd Future, leagues behind Tyler, The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, and Mellowhype. As the group's resident stoner, it surprised no one that his contribution to OFWGKTA was the Rolling Papers mixtape. That ramshackle effort, despite being appropriately hazy, didn't quite match what Domo had done with guest spots and on Radical.

But it seems the spotlight on Tyler has forced his cohorts to elevate their own talents. And so, backed a Dr. Dre beat, Domo releases one of his best songs yet. Between "Boss' Life" and April's "Cashmere," I'm actually looking forward what he does next--which is apparently the Under the Influence mixtape, despite no official announcement or release date.

Haiku Review of Tyler, The Creator's Goblin:

Shocking rhymes and words
Hide the wunderkind Tyler
Listen, potential

Notes: I wrote over 700 words on Tyler, and his helmed hip-hop collective, Odd Future, speaking at length about what it might take to appreciate his visceral brand of rap and what makes it so great. You can read that post by clicking here.

Theophilus London Released a Major Label EP - It's Good

Theophilus London's shtick has always been Morrissey-inspired art-rap, and while that doesn't always make for hyper-accessible jams, his mixtapes are solid front-to-back listens. With the release of his Lovers Holiday EP however, London takes some cues from basement-parties and the FM dial.

The songs on Lovers Holiday are surprisingly booze-friendly, something you might hear a really annoying blonde request at a club.

Related: "Sand-Castle Black X Blue" and "Humdrum Town" are still pretty great.

Beastie Boys' "Make Some Noise" Rad Video + an MP3

I was lukewarm when I first heard that new Beastie Boys single, "Make Some Noise." Or I was, until I saw the pretty great video featuring Danny McBride, Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood, Will Ferrel, John C. Reilly, Jack Black and cameos from the usual suspects who run with that crew.

The video's part of the Beastie's soon-to-be-awesome Fight For Your Right Revisited short film. Watch it above and dig the song below.

A Lil Wayne Mash-up Album Actually Worth Downloading

I get it, we're all sick of mash-ups. Unless they're really good. Is that how it works now? I thought Girl Talk's All Day was pretty great, The Hood Internet are still doing their thing well and Black Glove impress me every now and again with their basement interpretations.

Regardless, I'll always have a soft spot for the crypt-robbing genre and this Tumblewoof mini-mixtape was a surprise. It's five songs off Phoenix's Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix paired with choice Lil Wayne verses, but more than that, the DJ does your ears right by sampling/cutting/reordering the Phoenix tracks--the songs are more than simple A+B couplings.

The warmer the weather gets, the more I add to my BBQ playlist. These will do just fine.

How To: Make Sense of Tyler, The Creator & Odd Future

I created OF 'cause I felt we're more talented than 40-year-old rappers talking about Gucci
- Tyler, The Creator

I first caught wind of Tyler, The Creator when his mixtape, Bastard, started making the Best-of-2010 rounds, somewhere around August of last year. I downloaded a few MP3s, but nothing stuck--I found him abrasive, vitriolic, nihilistic, too challenging. It wasn't until a seven day span in mid-February that I really took notice. (Side-note: Is it a lame duck move for a blogger to admit he was behind the curve?)

In February, Tyler released the single and video for "Yonkers" -- his most commercial effort to date, not because it was released by a well-know label, XL Recordings, but because it distilled everything the indie-press raved about into a four-minute thesis; lyrical proficiency, atmospheric production, artistic horror, and genuine talent were all on display. The video only reiterated Tyler's hard-to-swallow genius. Did I mention he's only 19?

A few days later, with the help of Hodgy Beats, he performed live on Jimmy Fallon. From then on, Tyler, The Creator and his misfit rap-collective known as Odd Future, aka Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (or OFWGKTA), have everyone with a laptop, iTunes, and a blog taking notice. Thanks to some outstanding SXSW performances, the group's now known as much for their insane live shows as for their prolific mixtapes.

All that is more or less exposition. The talked-about issues surrounding Tyler and Odd Future are in regard to content, particularly their near-never-ending references to rape, homophobia, misogyny, et al., and how (if ever) a listener can digest it all. Frannie Kelley of NPR summed things up nicely when she wrote about the group in February...

"The music makes a lot of people uncomfortable and thrills others. They're funny. They're loud. They're lewd, nihilistic and disrespectful. The group raps about rape frequently. They give all of their music away for free. They curse constantly and use every slur you can think of. The beats they make and rhyme over are painfully aggressive, chest-rattling, undeniable. It's not easy to tell when the group is being serious, and when they're mocking you. Their music is alive — it punches you in the face. If you're over forty; have kids and are white, they don't like you."

The rest of Kelley's piece, titled "Why You Should Listen To The Rap Group Odd Future, Even Though It's Hard," takes an analytical approach in answering that question, and with good results. Other writers--including far more qualified hip-hop aficionados--have since discussed Odd Future ad nauseam. Depending on who you read, OFWGKTA are either radically breaking new ground, recycling themes from '90s hip-hop and horrorcore, or are horrible human beings perpetuating all the horrible things they rap about.

My friend Michelle recently linked to thoughtful Nitsuh Abebe blog post regarding Odd Future, particularly "the process of maybe-liking Odd Future." The New York Magazine/Pitchfork writer acknowledged the difficulty of listening to the music (the misogyny, rape, etc.), but concluded that anyone can enjoy the rapping, production, and talent of OFWGKTA if they thoughtfully "make decisions about which directions engage [them] as a listener and which ones don’t." Abebe is hitting the nail on its head.

"For those who can bracket [the offensive] and enjoy the many amazing things about the music, it’s one of the least interesting things about the group--misogyny and homophobia are everywhere, but music this vital is not," he wrote.

Abebe's idea of bracketing is a good one (you can read the entire post here) and for me, it links Odd Future's music with exploitation horror cinema. Genre films like Ms. 45, Thriller, Rolling Thunder, or I Spit on Your Grave focus greatly on rape, revenge, and misogyny, in order to evoke particular emotions from the viewer. Yes, this can be done for shock value, but more often than not, it's to purposefully engage an audience, forcing uncomfortable feelings as a way of broaching larger concepts or difficult emotions.

Whether or not Odd Future are digging for legitimate, visceral reactions is, for now, up to the listener. (For what it's worth, Michelle also linked to some possible interpretations from NPR's Ann Powers).

If anything, I predict Tyler's signing to a major label and the group's increased media attention to inherently dampen their exploitative schtick, putting the focus more on facility, less on rape and murder.

Either way, Tyler and Odd Future are exploding with talent, assuming you have the "pretty highly developed bracketing skills" to enjoy it. It just depends on you. I've seen and appreciated all those genre films listed above, but still can't stomach Nekromantik or Salò. And that's just me. The truth is, OFWGKTA aren't for everyone, which makes things a little frustrating when you're a music blogger wanting to share what you've been listening to in as few words as possible.

EDIT: New Lil Wayne Featuring Rick Ross "John"

Car speakers and college dorm rooms rejoice, the first leak off Lil Wayne's eagerly anticipated Tha Carter IV has arrived. "If I Die Today" is a banger featuring a J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League beat and Rick Ross's sleazy baritone.

Between this and "6 Foot 7 Foot," Weezy's on a tear.

Free Gucci (Again)... The Burrrtish Edition

Sometime last year in-between stints of Gucci Mane's jail-time, Diplo co-opted a bunch of friends to release a remix LP of their favourite Gucci tracks. The results were aptly-named Free Gucci and half the tracks were forgettable. As for the other half? Pretty solid, especially that Emynd remix.

Earlier this month Mad Decent released a second volume of icy remixes, Free Gucci 2: The Burrrtish Edition. This time around, some fine British talent injected dupstep flavours behind Mr. Radric Davis' raps.

Again, the results are hit-or-miss, but if you like Gucci and/or bass music, there's something here for you. That, and the These New Puritans remix is the closest thing we'll get to a Gucci Mane/Thom Yorke collaboration (for now).

Girl Talk Makes Your Week, Releases New, Free LP

Girl Talk (aka party-mastermind Gregg Gillis) decided to blow the internet's mind earlier today by releasing his new album, All Day, out of the blue. I haven't been able to listen to a single track just yet, but Night Ripper was awesome, Feed the Animals was awesome, so I'm going to go ahead and assume that All Day will be, wait for it...

Awesome.

My Top Five Favourite G.O.O.D. Friday Tracks

For those living without a pulse, Kanye West's forthcoming My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy leaked a fews days ago* and anyone with a clue and a wi-fi connection probably has it.

Since the album's official release is right around the corner (Nov. 22) and the weekend is upon us, I figured I'd post my most listened to tracks from Ye's G.O.O.D. Fridays project.

* The record is as great as Kanye's ego is big (so, amazing). It's really no surprise that two of my selected tracks are also on the LP, ("Monster" and "Devil in a New Dress"). You can grab the album here if you haven't yet, but note all anyone's got so far is the 'clean' version... Your mom will appreciate the no swears.
